The Camaro from "Better off Dead" found and restored

The late, great Lane Meyer, played by John Cusack in the 1985 flick Better Off Dead, made sweet on Monique over the engine bay of a 1967 Camaro.

Jeff was so taken with the car that he tracked it down, despite the fact that the man who owned it during the filming of the movie had sold it. It was in pretty rough shape, with a tacked-on spoiler, the beginning of rust creeping in, and lots of cracked interior vinyl.

Jeff put together a web site telling how he tracked the Camaro down, complete with unnecessary quotes from the movie playing in the background while you read it.

You might remember it from the scene where John Cusack races the asian dudes in their rusted out ghetto sled(Muddy Waters playing in the background.)

http://www.timemachinesinc.com/ restored it.

Racing, click on these for full size,

Though Smokey set several speed and endurance records with the car at Bonneville, with both a 302 cubic inch and a 396 cubic inch engine, it never won a race while Yunick owned it. It was later sold to Don Yenko, who did win several races.

A stock appearing Camaro, Smokey had acid-dipped the body panels and installed thinner glass to reduce weight, tilted the front end down and the windshield back for aerodynamics, widened the fenders, z'ed the front frame, and sucked the floorpan up to lower the car. The driprails were even brought closer to the body for a tiny aerodynamic improvement. Don't forget that the most common thing Smokey did to all his cars, was to streamline them for reduces air drag, all the underside was modified to reduce angles and flow air around flat spots. All of the aerodynamic things Smokey did are readily attributed to his experiences as a B-17 pilot, and the knowledge gained from airplane design and dynamics.

Where did the name "Camaro" come from?

An Italian magazine in the '60's stated that the Italian word camaro means "to back up, to retreat." It also said that the word means crawfish...

CAMARO is short for:
Cannot Actually Move And Ricers Own
Heard any others that are funnier? jbohjkl@yahoo.com

Dictionary.com has nothing on the word, and Wikipedia says this... "Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers "What is a Camaro?", and were told it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs".

The name conveniently fit Chevrolet's "C" naming structure that included Caprice, Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II and Corvette." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camaro

From http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z169/Chevrolet-Camaro-RS.aspx I read that Camaro in French is slang for "friend"
