PREVIEW: Future Mercedes-Benz compact SUVs - Further information

We have tackled this subject several times in the past as new inside details were coming out from time to time. On the basis of the forthcoming A- & B-Klasse models, Mercedes-Benz will build an entire range of new and appealing versions. The compact SUV to compete with BMW X1 and Audi Q3 could be badged, as you may have already learnt, either BLK or GLA. After a while, we brought you the first information on Merc's possible compact SUV coupe, that might be called GLC. We now go back to it as further hints have surfaced in the last days. The car is expected to sport a radical exterior design, which borrows essential 'pieces' from the great, highly inspiring concepts the Stuttgart-based carmaker has released so far. Most probably, the future GLC will be yet another controversial Mercedes-Benz model. The underpinnings will come straight from the A/B classes, which means MFA; obviously, for extra capabilities, the engineers will also develop an all-wheel-drive platform, using torque vectoring system and a multi-plate clutch as prime solutions. The list of engines will include efficient petrol and diesel motors ranging from 1.6 up to 2.1 liters. Expect eco gimmicks such start/stop system or brake energy recuperation, thanks to the BlueEFFICIENCY package installed across the whole lineup. Customers will be able to join the powerplants with a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch tranny (expected to be standard on peak models). Hybrid or fuel-cell versions are also possible. As the BLK/GLA is bound for a 2013 reveal, the GLC is tipped for launch in 2014.
