The new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG: Design and equipment - Emotional, sporty and the ultimate in quality – characteristically AMG
Unmistakable, dynamic and exclusive – attributes which are characteristic of an AMG high-performance car. And this is also true of the new Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG: the design, appointments and feel of the vehicle convey a sense of emotive appeal, sportiness and ultimate quality. The E 63 AMG fulfills its role as the most powerful top-of-the-range E-Class model with effortless superiority.
Two years after its market launch, the E 63 AMG now presents a subtly updated exterior. The "V8 BITURBO" lettering on the distinctive, wider front wings referencing the new 8-cylinder engine is just as characteristic a feature as the new AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted titanium grey and with high-sheen rim flanges. The filigree-look spokes also provide a clear view of the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system.
The characteristic AMG bodystyling includes the distinctive front apron: the large air intakes with black grilles help with the efficient flow of air through the cooling module positioned behind. The air vents in the front right-hand wheel well liner allow hot air from the additional AMG radiator to escape. Another highlight comes in the form of the AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights. In conjunction with the optional Intelligent Light System, the E 63 AMG features darkened bi-xenon headlamps. In an exciting touch, expressively shaped side sill panels continue the line of the spoiler lip from the front apron through to rear. The rear apron, with its black diffuser insert, emphasises the width of the vehicle. The two chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, meanwhile, add a finishing touch of self confidence.
Significantly enhanced interior
Luxurious quality, high-grade materials and perfect business-class comfort, combined with a significant amount of dynamism and sportiness – this is what the interior of the E 63 AMG is all about. Significant enhancements include the new AMG Performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design. With its flattened upper and lower sections, and grip areas finished in perforated leather, it enables optimum control of the vehicle. The aluminium shift paddles, and the three-dimensional design of the airbag cover with metallic "Silver Shadow" trim, provide the perfect look and feel. Also new is the attractively designed E-SELECT selector lever with embossed AMG badge.
The colour TFT display in the centre of the speedometer, used to display three-dimensional images, also conveys a sense of precision and ultimate quality. On opening the door to the E 63 AMG, the driver is greeted with a distinctive AMG logo in the TFT display.
Driver and front passenger also benefit from independent AMG sports seats, featuring a cross-piping design as well as electric adjustment, seat heating and AMG badges. All seats, armrests and door centre panels are finished in fine leather, and the seat centre panels in perforated leather. The quality of finish of the leather, which is soft to the touch, makes for a particularly pleasant ride experience. Three different appointment colours are available: black, mocha brown/almond beige and reef grey/alpaca grey. Trim elements also boast the highest quality black ash/black piano lacquer finishes.
Specific instruments and AMG main menu
The AMG instrument cluster, which is located in a dashboard finished in ARTICO man-made leather, serves as the central source of information: the five classic round dials are integrated into a silver backplate and feature an AMG-specific look, red needles and a 320-km/h graduated scale. The AMG lettering in the speedometer, and the V8 BITURBO logo in the rev counter help to distinguish the vehicle from the standard models of the E-Class.
A truly special AMG feature is the AMG main menu, which helps keep the driver comprehensively informed. Integrated into the central colour display of the speedometer, it provides access to the three modes of "Warm Up", "Set Up" and "RACE". "Warm Up" indicates the engine oil and coolant temperature, "Set Up" indicates the current ESP® mode, the suspension setting – "Comfort", "Sport" or "Sport plus" – and the transmission mode – "C", "S", "S+" or "M". In "RACE" the RACETIMER is ready; this allows the driver to record lap times on private racing circuits. All of the functions of the AMG main menu are operated conveniently via the multifunction buttons on the AMG Performance steering wheel.
A further characteristic control is the AMG DRIVE UNIT in the centre console. It enables individual settings to be selected for the MCT sports transmission, the ESP® functions, the suspension set-up and the AMG drive modes. The AMG E‑SELECT selector lever, which boasts a compact, sporty design and leather finish, now comes with a high-quality embossed AMG badge. A slight nudge is all that is required to shift between R, N and D, while briefly pressing on the P‑button engages the parking lock.
